Whenever the words 'post-rock' are thrown around, thoughts usually turn to bands like Mogwai and Explosions in the Sky, but with Homes for Everyone Melbourne's Silver Ray prove that instrumental rock music need not be down, dense and melalcholic. Cam Butler and co. are exquisite musicians, and they have infused this album with a studied sense of class, restraint and grandeur. Homes opens with You Know the Truth, an uplifting marching ballad reminiscent of recent Do Make Say Think, and later in the album they go at it in true Dirty Three fashion with strings, swirling atmospherics, twinkling keys and rampant percussion. If a picture paints a thousand words, an album like Homes paints a good bible's worth.
